Bilbao City Hall commissions a survey of the Bilbao Estuary to help sustainably organise the bankside areas

13/06/2019

Bilbao City Hall has commissioned a diagnostic survey of the Bilbao Estuary as the fulcrum driving the city’s activity through the activities linked to the water flowing over its bed and supported by the areas along its banks. The aim is to gather information that Will help organise its bankside áreas in a safe, sustainable and environmentallyfriendly way.

To do, it is necessary to know the features of the different stretches on its way through Bilbao, from La Peña to Zorrotza, on Zorrotzaurre, Punta Zorrotza, San Inazio, la Ribera de Elorrieta and the banks of the Ibaizabal river lying in the area of the Larreagaburu and the Ibaieder parks.

It aims to research the medium: The depths in the different parts of the Estuary, currents, the different types of sediment, etc. In short, everything occurring below the surface of the water. An environmental assessment Will also be carried out to detect the presence of any plant or animal species that may require constraints on activity to ensure their conservation. An awareness of all these aspects Will enable decisions to be taken as to what kind of activities can be undertaken in each area.

Lastly, an analysis of all the singular structures and elements along the Estuary Banks Will be undertaken to assess which of these are worthy of conservation.

The report Will also include an analysis of the state of the wharfs.
